Anyone wishing to obtain reliable knowledge about the history of Shotokan Karate, it is not easy. On websites and in karate books are often only very short breaks to find them, moreover, are often riddled by false claims and myths. Some relief in this regard, Henning Wittwer promises with his recently published book Shotokan - The surviving texts and historical studies, in which he deals with "some important points aus der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Shotokan-Ryu" (Wittwer) auseinandersetzt.
Das Buch ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Der erste enthält, wie der Titel schon sagt, einige überlieferte Texte, deren Autoren für die Geschichte der Stilrichtung wichtige Personen sind, namentlich Matsumura Bucho, Asato Anko, Itosu Anko, Funakoshi Gichin, Kosugi Hoan (der zeichnerische Urheber des berühmten Shotokan-Tigers), und Egami Shigeru. Die Texte, von denen der Großteil dem Autor zufolge erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung vorliegt, sind mit erläuternden Fußnoten versehen sowie jeweils um einen Kommentar erweitert, der biographische Daten der jeweiligen Autoren sowie zusätzliche Erläuterungen enthält, which the original texts classify understand and help.
The second part consists Wittwer exploring different aspects of Shotokan-Ryu. He focuses on the Chinese origins of the Kata Channan (the precursor of today's Heian kata), the influence of the sword Jigen-ryu to the Karate, devotes an entire chapter to the various kata and ended the book with an outline of the development of Shotokan-Ryu of Funakoshi time today.

Auch der zweite Teil liefert fundiertes Hintergrundwissen und enthält teilweise recht interessante and new views and theories about what concerns the relationship of today's Kata Heian and Kanku.
